Arthritis

You are here: Home / Latest News / Belmont / Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that leads to pain and progressive degeneration of the joint. It can affect many aspects of a dog’s life including causing limited mobility, painful joints and a poor quality of life. It is important to look out for signs like limping, slowing down on walks, being slow to rise or having difficulty jumping. While many cases of arthritis occur in older, overweight, and larger breed dogs, the condition can affect dogs of all sizes, ages and breeds.

Thankfully, there are many options available to help your pet maintain better quality of life and enjoy life again. Prevention is also important and therefore it is vital to keep your pet slim and trim. Extra weight causes more strain on joints and overweight animals are less active which leads to muscle wastage. Please call for a consultation with one of our nurses, who can tailor a program for your pet. Medications like anti-inflammatories and injections such as Pentosan, Beransa (dogs) / Solensia (cats) can be very effective at controlling the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis.

Pentosan is a Chondro protectant (Cartilage + Protective) à Increases synovial fluid + blood flow and reduces inflammation.

Beransa/Solensia is a Monoclonal antibody targets nerve growth factor and neutralises it. This decreases pain and sensitivity.

Never give human painkillers to pets, such as aspirin and nurofen as these can be lethal.

Please contact us on our website www.lakevet.com.au or alternatively you can phone 49459677 Belmont or 49436066 Charlestown to make an appointment with our veterinarians to discuss an arthritis plan.
